Export Markdown to PDF and HTML

Downsmith turns the Markdown you are writing into a PDF or a standalone HTML page in a few clicks. It is free and works offline on macOS and Linux.

Save Markdown as PDF

  1. Open your Markdown file in Downsmith.
  2. Choose File > Print / Save as PDF… (⌘P on macOS, Ctrl+P on Linux).
  3. In the print dialog choose Save as PDF. On macOS this is the PDF menu at the bottom left. On Linux choose the printer Print to File, which writes a PDF.

The PDF shows the rendered page only, without the editor, the tabs or the sidebar, whichever view mode you use.

Save Markdown as HTML

  1. Open your Markdown file in Downsmith.
  2. Choose File > Export as HTML… (⇧⌘E on macOS, Ctrl+Shift+E on Linux).
  3. Pick a name and a folder. The file ends in .html.

You get one HTML file with its styles and syntax colors included. It follows the light or dark setting of whoever opens it. Raw HTML inside your Markdown is not rendered, and the content is sanitized.

PDF or HTML?

Choose PDF to print, to attach to an email or to keep a fixed layout. Choose HTML for a page that is read on screen, opens in any browser and can be put on a website.

One document at a time

Export works on the document that is open. To export several files, open them in tabs and export one after the other.
